Why will my computer connect to an unsecured WIFI connection, but not my PS3?

I connect to a NETGEAR router that is unsecured through my computer. But when I try to connect to the same network with my PS3, it either times out trying to obtain the IP Address, or says "Succeeded" but internet connection says "failed". What can I do to get my PS3 to connect just like my computer, or why will it not connect through an Ethernet cable hooked from the PS3 to my computer?
