Why are so many American streets given names like 42nd Street, 129th Avenue? It seems a bit unimaginative...?

in the towns they do have imaginative names, in the city its much easier to number them...if you're on 5th street and need to get to 9th you know which direction to go...if they were named Henderson street and you needed to get to Bridge street you would have no sense of which way to go...
