Why did Prophet Muhammad allow cousin marriage but insist couples fed by same wet nurse divorce?

Muhammad seems to have erred, if the story is true. Consanguineous marriage is a real problem. It seems to be caused as much by the custom of marrying within a tribe as lack of opportunity to meet unrelated partners.
